Up, Up and Away!

I guess it’s pretty obvious that I love dogs, but did you know that I also love Superman? In 2020, I was looking for more shows to watch when I stumbled upon the CW TV series Smallville. Although Superman lives in the fictional big city of Metropolis, as a boy the young Clark Kent grew up in the appropriately named fictional small town of Smallville.

So in Smallville the part of the alien with super powers from Krypton Clark Kent is played fantastically by Tom Welling. In this classic “fish out of water” story, we watch Clark’s journey in becoming Superman. The difference I really enjoy between this show and the Superman movies is that you really see his struggle to not only discover his abilities, but how difficult it is for him to keep his secret from the ones he loves most. I really enjoyed the well thought-out plots, complicated characters, and fitting song choices, so I decided to stick with it.

Now if you’re not a huge fan of the comics or super heroes, or never even heard of the show Smallville, you may be thinking, “I know the basics about Superman, but what does any of this have to do with a blog about dogs?” If you know anything about Superman, you might recognize his famous line in my title, “Up, up and away,” that he uses before he takes off flying. Well, as I’ve already mentioned in a previous post, In the comics Superman has a dog also from Krypton named Krypto who can also fly. One of my favorite episodes of Smallville, called “Krypto” changes up this story and features an earth dog that is experimented on with green Kryptonite, and the side give him superpowers including flight.

When Lois Lane, at that time Clark’s friend but his future girlfriend, accidentally hits the dog with her car, she takes him to Clark’s parents’ home. There Clark discovers Krypto’s super powers.

If you would like to read a more in depth review of the episode and why it’s so special to me, please feel free to review my full review here: https://juliasdogblog.com/2021/03/16/even-superman-needs-a-dog-my-thoughts-on-krypto-an-episode-from-the-series-smallville/

So my Mom knew how much I love dogs and this show and especially this episode with this dog. So she made me a customized stuffed Superdog for what we affectionately call “the dog room.” This room has our “dog tree” with over 170 plush dogs  and dog decorations (see my previous post on it here: https://juliasdogblog.com/2021/04/07/an-ocd-former-detective-learns-to-love-a-dog-my-thoughts-on-mr-monk-and-the-dog/ my favorite dog movie posters, framed dog puzzles, and our huge TV.

My Mom is very creative so she bought a Superman harness, put in on a white plush German Shepherd, and hung it from the celling. Of course, it looks like Krypto is flying in his costume just like in the comics!

Why another post about Krypto the Superdog? Well, I do kind of have a thing about national holidays, especially if they involve dogs. Today, June 12, is National Superman Day, and what kind of dog blogger would I be if I didn’t talk about Superman’s best friend, Krypto? And it also gives me an excuse to share a picture of my new flying dog. Up, up and away!

I’ve always loved to write stories ever since I was a kid. I started writing stories again, at the end of 2020. These stories will be about not only how we change dog’s lives, but how they change ours as well.

  1. Wow, that is such a HUGE compliment, Wanda! Thank you so much! You can find Smallville on Hulu if you’d like to check it out! I enjoyed it from the beginning, but the season mod finale had me hooked! The same thing happened with Mom! I hope you enjoy it too!
