Who Rescued Who?

“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog the world will change forever.” – Karen Davidson

I rescued Sunny on August 23, 2018, my birthday, from our local animal shelter. Or should I say Sunny rescued me? A sign in my room asks, “Who rescued who?” My Dad says it should be “Who rescued whom?”

I was so nervous and excited in the day that Sunny and I rescued each other! My friend, a veterinarian, suggested that I adopt the dog that came to me first. It proved to be great advice. The smaller dogs looked disinterested and seemed to be avoiding me, most likely because I’m physically handicapped, and were probably afraid of me falling on them. At first, this disheartened me, but then my Mom called me over to see a Shepherd lab mix, called a Carolina dog, a beautiful medium-sized female with tan/red hair that was quiet and calm. As soon as she was let out of her cage, she came right up to me and laid on my lap. She stole my heart! This memory always makes me smile.

Why am I reliving and retelling Sunny’s story today? Because today, May 20, is National Rescue Dog Day! Do you have a rescue dog or cat? Would you like to share their story? Do you want to share a picture? I would love to read stories and see pictures! Please feel free to share their stories and pictures in the comments! And be sure to tell me in your case who rescued whom?

I’ve always loved to write stories ever since I was a kid. I started writing stories again, at the end of 2020. These stories will be about not only how we change dog’s lives, but how they change ours as well.

  1. While we realized that another dog could not replace the one who died, there was a hole to be filled. Bill and I needed a dog to love while still grieving the loss of Beau. After 3 trips to the Humane Society this little furbaby came home. She had similar markings as Beau, but our Shenandoah had her own personality. Caring for her started the book of love we had for her throughout her 12 years.
