My Best Birthday Gift Ever (part two): Sunny’s Gotcha Day

August 23, 2017 was my birthday and I was hoping to finally get a dog. It didn’t seem like it was going to happen. My dad came home from work, and like I wrote in part one, packed us up in the car to see a landfill! What was that about? When my dad pointed out the landfill in the distance, I heard lots of dogs barking… It was the animal shelter!

I was so relieved and excited! “Does this mean I get to adopt a dog today?” I asked. My mom and dad smiled and said, “Happy Birthday!”

All along, my mom wanted me to get a medium-sized, light-colored, short-haired and affectionate girl dog. The light color and short hair was all about the dog shedding in the house. The affection was all about a dog who was perfect for me. Meanwhile, my dad was thinking about a smaller dog, because he thought it would be great for me to have a lap dog.

I walked up and down long aisles lined with clean cages full of some enthusiastic barking and tail-wagging dogs who seemed to be saying “Pick me! Pick me!” Other dogs moped around seeming to have given up hope on being adopted.

As my dad and I checked out the smaller  dogs, they didn’t seem to show much interest in me. I felt like they could sense my balance wasn’t the best and that that made them wary of me. Meanwhile, my mom searched the medium dogs. She passed by a few dogs including one that got so excited it wet itself. Then, she spotted one that caught her eye.

She was drawn to a long-haired ruby red German Shepherd and lab mix (LOTS of shedding!) named “Ruby.” They call this mix a “Carolina dog.” Perfect! The dog was quiet and meek in the cage next to her ruby red brother. When my mom put her hand through the cage to pet Ruby, this dog leaned into her hand and closed her eyes and stole my mom’s heart.

She called me over to see the dog and when the shelter worker opened her cage, she immediately ran over to me and laid right in my lap! She stole my heart right away too! Of course, I renamed Ruby “Sunny,” and the name fits her perfectly! She has a sunny disposition and loves the sun!

In this picture taken that day, you can see my medium-sized light-colored and long-haired crazy-shedding Sunny smiling! I found the perfect dog for me and I think she knew she had found her forever home!

I’ve always loved to write stories ever since I was a kid. I started writing stories again, at the end of 2020. These stories will be about not only how we change dog’s lives, but how they change ours as well.

  1. I so enjoyed this story of finding just the right dog friend. I remember a similar experience when I was about 9 years old. Our family had moved to St. Louis and for the first time we were without a family pet, our old dog, Joansey, having passed away. We went to the Humane Society to see the dogs since my dad firmly believed the best dogs were “Heinz 57’s”…those whose mix could be anything! As we walked through the cages, the dogs were anxiously barking and looking for us to pet them. My parents were looking at several of them, but I just wasn’t that interested yet. Then I saw just the right dog, quietly waiting in a corner for me to come pet her. So I did and we became friends right away. My dad finally found me and saw us together and told the attendant, “ We would like that one.” And so we adopted Cookie, her name, and kept the name since it suited her. Sunny reminds me of Cookie since her coloring and size are quite similar. I know how you felt bringing Sunny home and having a new friend. She is special.
