My parents had promised me for a long time that when we moved to North Carolina I could get a dog. I just didn’t know when. My Dad wanted to keep that part a surprise for me. I just knew that after meeting my friend’s rescue dog and seeing how sweet he was, I also wanted to rescue a dog from a shelter. I wanted a girl, and I had her name picked out before I even knew I was getting a dog.
After almost two months of living in North Carolina, I still didn’t have my promised dog. By my birthday, August 23, neither of my parents had said anything about a dog, so I figured I would still be waiting. After all, my mom kept on repeating that she loved dogs but hated dog hair in the house!
So For my birthday I asked my Mom to spend the day with me for a TV marathon. That’s how I planned to spend the day.
Then out of the blue, my Dad came home from work and asked me if I wanted to see a landfill. I had no idea what on earth he was taking about, but I said okay out of curiosity. We all loaded in the car and I watched the summer scenery outside the window absent-mindedly wondering what the big deal was about a landfill. We pulled over a hill and my dad excitedly pointed out the landfill on the horizon. But I finally realized what he was up to when close by I heard barking…
To be continued…
Looking forward to the “rest of the story.” Ask your grandmother what radio star used to say that!
