“Diamonds Are Furever:” My Review of Turner and Hooch Episode 3

Turner and Hooch is a great new series on Disney+ based on the classic movie with the same title and the same premise, an OCD clean freak US Marshall, Turner, is reluctantly stuck with a huge slobbering troublesome Mastiff named Hooch.

This third episode, like each one before it, has a cute dog pun in the title, “Diamonds Are Furever,” an obvious play on the seventh installment of the James Bond spy movies, “Diamonds Are Forever.”

After Turner’s partner, Jessica Baxter, has been involved in multiple shootouts and rescued by Turner and Hooch from kidnappers, her boss decides that she is in too much danger for a pregnant woman, so she has no choice but to be on desk duty.

Turner needs a new partner and wants to be on fellow Marshall Trent Havelock’s cool team, but he is irritated by Trent’s obnoxious personality, by his dislike of dogs, and especially by his maddening habit of taking credit for other’s accomplishments, especially Turner and Hooch’s. To my surprise, Turner is eager and excited to join, with Hooch, what Trent narcissistically calls his “T-squad” in trying to track down the infamous jewelry thief, Krista St. Jean.

While trying to track St. Jean, somehow Hooch loses the scent and finds his way into a pet store and brings out a squeaky toy, which Turner is forced to buy. Trent and his squad make fun of Turner and Hooch’s tracking skills, which leaves Turner in dismay.

Turner goes to Erica for guidance, and she has them play hide and seek and tells him that Hooch needs to help guide and support him, and he’s able to find the scent of Erica’s brother.

Meanwhile, Scott’s sister Laura keeps looking into their father’s last case, even after Turner tells her he’s one hundred percent sure that there’s nothing more to it.

A highlight for me from this episode is when Turner gets unnerved by Hooch squeaking his toy and tries everything to get him to stop. He tries taking it away, replacing it with others that have no squeaker, and even sowing a quieter squeaker in. But this only makes it even worse, because Hooch barks and disturbs the neighbors.

I also really enjoyed the playful romance between Turner and Erica, the canine explosion detection trainer. They go jogging together with their dogs, and sweaty Turner looks Erica straight in the eyes and says that he wants to ask her a question. Erica smiles, because she is anticipating him asking her on a date. Do you think you know where this is going? Well, you’re wrong. Because he asks her a question about Hooch and when her face falls, I feel so bad for her! I guess it’s obvious to everyone that Erica likes Turner. Well, obvious to everyone but Turner, that is!

I’ve always loved to write stories ever since I was a kid. I started writing stories again, at the end of 2020. These stories will be about not only how we change dog’s lives, but how they change ours as well.
