“A Good Day to Dog Hard:” My review of Turner and Hooch episode 2

Last week I posted my review of the first episode of the new series “Turner and Hooch,” the TV show based on the 1989 Tom Hanks movie with the same name.  https://juliasdogblog.com/2021/07/22/forever-and-a-dog-my-review-of-turner-and-hooch-the-tv-series-episode-one/ Scott Turner Jr., played by Josh Peck, is a neatnick and a State Marshall like his father, and is – surprise, surprise – also saddled with an unwanted dog named Hooch left to him by his Dad when he passed. Like in the original, Turner discovers that Hooch is more of an asset to him than a burden.

The second episode, like each one, has a dog pun in the title. This one, “A Good Day to Dog Hard,” is obviously based on the title of the fifth installment in the “Die Hard” movie series, “A Good Day to Die Hard.”

In this episode, Turner and Hooch are on their first day of K-9 duty sweeping the hotel for the Olympic community for bombs. But of course things go awry when Hooch wants to play and knocks over the food cart and jumps in the foundation, which upsets Turner. But somehow all this chaos makes a little girl giggle with delight. When the police chief calls, Turner assumes he is going to fire him, but is utterly surprised to find out that the little girl who has fallen in love with Hooch is none other than the head of the Olympic community’s daughter. Turner and Hooch  are assigned to look after her in what in her words is a “play date.”

Meanwhile, Turner and his sister investigate their father’s last case. It looks like he was looking into something dangerous and something just doesn’t sit right with them about it.

One highlight for me from this episode is that Turner has to do whatever this little girl wants while he’s babysitting her. So he is stuck at a tea party with Hooch and the little girl, miserable, and not having the slightest clue what to do or how to have fun with it. That is until Turner sympathizes with her when she tells him how lonely she is and that she has no friends or no nanny at the moment. This is mostly likely why she develops such a strong attachment to Hooch. Softening towards her he agrees to eat more cupcakes, (which are not on his diet plan,) and she puts nail polish on him.

I also love how Erica, the canine explosive detection trainer, and potential love interest, not only gives Turner good advice about how work and play are one and the same for dogs, but also awkwardly flirts with him.

Jessica Baxter, Turner’s witty, pregnant partner gets kidnapped. This second episode has more action humor, and clever dog puns. In my opinion, it is definitely an episode that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and will have you thinking it’s “a good day to dog hard.” Out of curiosity, is there anyone else out there that feels like watching “Die Hard,” now?

I’ve always loved to write stories ever since I was a kid. I started writing stories again, at the end of 2020. These stories will be about not only how we change dog’s lives, but how they change ours as well.
