Can Anybody Resist Those “Puppy Dog Eyes?”

“My dog looks at me sometimes with that look and I think maybe deep down inside she must know exactly how I feel. But then maybe she just wants the food off my plate.”

-Unknown

Those “puppy dog eyes!” Anybody who has ever had a dog knows what I’m talking about. We even use the phrase to talk about people when they give that irresistible pleading look. But nobody does “puppy dog eyes” like a dog, right?

My dog Sunny will come up to me at least once a day, put her paw up in the air or on my knee, stare at me longingly with those beautiful big brown eyes, and start batting those long dark eyelashes at me and melt my heart. Of course it always fills me up with joy. I think if the dictionary people were looking for a picture to go with the definition for “puppy dog eyes,” they should consider Sunny’s version!

When she gives me that look, I sometimes wonder, like the unknown dog owner in the quote above, what does she really want? Does she want me to love on her? Does she want me to give her a treat? Maybe both? Or does she really want to pull my heartstrings and love her more?

What do you think? Do you think they just know this look works and that’s why they keep doing it? Or do you think they really feel as sincerely as they look? I’d love to know: your dog does this, right? Cat owners out there, do cats do this? Does it work?

I don’t know about you, but I think Sunny knows it works and is truly sincere at the same time. I always end up petting her and giving her the attention she wants, because seriously, how can anybody resist those “puppy dog eyes”?

I’ve always loved to write stories ever since I was a kid. I started writing stories again, at the end of 2020. These stories will be about not only how we change dog’s lives, but how they change ours as well.
