Bruce Cameron is my favorite author and perhaps the world’s best-known and best-selling novelist about dogs. For those of you who have never read any of his books (Where have you been? You call yourself a dog-lover?), there are many reasons why I’m a fan and recommend his books to you, and it’s not just because of my love for dogs.
- Every time I read one of his books, I’m reminded that I should live in the present and enjoy the little things, just like a dog does.
- All of Cameron’s novels are full of twists and turns and delightful surprises that keep you turning the page until the very end. I’ve always loved to read, but as I got older, I started to get in the rut of picking out the same kind of romantic novels that I could always see the ending coming from the first page and it started to feel more like a chore. And then I discovered “A Dog’s Purpose,” his first novel about a dog (since made into a fantastic movie). I didn’t see the ending coming and I was thrilled to be surprised. I’ve read nearly all his other dog books since and can never put them down once I start!
- I’ve found Mr. Cameron writes for all ages. If you are a younger reader or have kids or grandkids, then I have great news for you. Bruce Cameron took the novel “A Dog’s Purpose,” and adapted into a series for kids with no death or (spoiler alert!) reincarnation. It is easier for kids to understand and enjoy!
- At least three of his books feature handicapped persons as a main character, and as I was growing up as a handicapped kid, I rarely found main characters in books, TV shows, or movies that were like me. His inclusion of characters with handicaps not only gives people like me a character to relate to, but helps those who don’t have a disability to relate to me. I was very touched. These stories inspire all of us to not be defined by what happens to us, what hardships we face, but by how we respond and what we make of our lives.
Well, there you have why I’m such a fan of Bruce Cameron and his books and why I recommend him so highly to you. I hope you try a book and enjoy it!
